Cool Crap : Japanese Poster For Doctor Butcher M.D aka Zombie Holocaust

After my recent birthday celebrations I picked up a few cool Japanese movie posters, here is the first for the splatter classic Doctor Butcher M.D a.k.a Zombie Holocaust. Way back when in the days of reading Deep Red magazine, before ever having the chance to see this movie I remember thinking what a cool title it was, at least under it's Doctor Butcher M.D moniker. Once you see the movie, although it's great splattery fun, you realise the title is the best thing about it! This Japanese poster is all kinds of cool though.

Zombie Holocaust

Look out for more, coming soon!

Cool indeed ! The Japanese have a real busy design style but I love it. I'm actually looking at film posters at the moment to frame and hang in the house, but they won't be anything as kinky as this baby, I'll probably go for something more classical to keep my wife happy. I've been looking for ages now, it's hard to choose one. Failing that I'll pick up a Jackson Pollack. If I could hang one poster of my choice, it would be the British quad of A Nightmare on Elm Street, a truely gorgeous piece of poster art. So, Mart will you hang this one or put it on a board ? There is something very cool about a home with framed movie posters...

These Japanese posters are fantastic. I have a Japanese poster of the release of Zombi 2 that I must have bought almost twenty years ago. Great stuff, indeed.

Wes, I love that Nightmare poster too, a real classic. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with this one, I have nowhere near enough space to hang them all but that doesn't stop me picking them up when the chance arises. I suppose I could rotate them. Another great thing about these Japanese posters is the size, being roughly 20 by 28 inches, they are much easier to frame. What are the classical ones you were considering?

Hans, I'd love to see that poster, and what a great film to have it for!

I was thinking along the lines of Gone With the Wind, or Forbidden Planet, or the Italian poster for Antonioni's
L'Avventura, a really striking piece of poster art... All my films and film books are kept in our attic conversion and it's a pretty good set up - I've got my laserdiscs on dispaly as well as some nice pre-cert videos like Nightmares In A Damamged Brain and The Crazies. It's a nerd room for sure, but its a nice space to relax in...

Wes, I always did like the artwork for Forbidden Planet, and the L'Avventura piece looks really tasteful. A little too classical for me though! As for your man cave, sounds like a great place to hangout, can you watch movies in there too? Or is it a quiet place?

Yeah, it's a quiet room... I thought if I put a TV and a player in there I'd spend all my time up there so... Funnily enough Mart, I found an old ebay page earlier, selling a German Super 8mm copy of Zombie Holocaust and I must say, it did look very nice. The auction closed, 23 bids later at £84. Much too rich for my blood.

I know exactly what you mean Wes. That Zombie Holocaust does look like a nice thing to have on the shelf but as you say £84 is, shall we say, a little steep! That seller has some great Japanese posters though... Must resist.

Wes, fair enough to go 'classical' to keep your wife happy... as long as she's prepared to go 'splatter' and 'kinky' to keep you happy :-)

Years ago, I hung a massive poster of 'Dr. Lamb' (the lurid Hong Kong one) on the living room wall and the ex-wife did initially have reservations because 'visitors' might be offended

I told her: "When the visitors start making house payments and begin taking care of bills, I'll take the poster down

It remained on that wall in all its sleazy glory for a couple of years; it was eventually replaced by the fantastic SENTENCED TO HANG poster, and that remained there until the marriage ended and I headed north

Great DR. BUTCHER poster. I want that for my wall now.

I'd love to have that Dr. Lamb poster Phantom, lurid is the perfect word. I'm not sure I've seen the Sentenced To Hang poster, I'll have to look that one up.

It makes me wonder just what happened to all the HK posters from the time, probably just thrown away or used to pack and wrap, aside from a few receiving the T.L.C of a few fans. Sigh.
