Recent Buys Special : New Laserdisc Player And 200th Post

I wanted to do something special for my 200th post, and that special something is a new (well new to me at least) Pioneer DVL-909 Laserdisc and dvd combi player. I've been wanting to get hold of one of these for years, but I've always found them just too expensive. Ken from Sogoodreviews recently managed to get hold of one and this reminded me to have another look as my trusty, modded Pioneer CLD-1450 player is 20 years old, and frankly on it's last legs.

I've tried to pick one up on ebay countless times but never managed to actually win. I found this on a classifieds forum, the advert had received no interest, so I made an offer, which the seller snapped up. It's a great piece of kit and features both sides playback for laserdisc, which is clearly one of the coolest inventions ever.

All I need now are some lovely new Hong Kong laserdiscs to play on it, if you are looking to off load any, please send me an email.

What a beauty...back to the future indeed !

200th post - well done. Tremendous blog, it's given me so much new Cinema to be excited about. Of all the blogs I visit, this is one of the most well loved among readers...

Congratulations on the 200th post!

I love this phrase: "It's a great piece of kit" as I haven't heard that since I worked with/for a bunch of Brits.

My best friend proudly got a "flipper" LD player and I remember many a Criterion LD we were watching and the inevitable -- and sometimes noisy -- as the machine "flipped" and started to read the other side of the LD.

Wes, Love the back to the future comment.

Thanks for the kind words, it means so much to me receiving comments like yours. At times you can't help feeling why am I doing this? and this is exactly the reason. Thanks once again!

rG. I did feel lucky to find it, I'd been trying for so long but I knew I'd snag one sooner or later. I really appreciate your comments and support. Thanks

BT. Thanks for your comment, very much appreciated. Did you sell on with the laserdiscs or did your player die?

Congrats on your 200th post, sir!

Glenn, Thank you for commenting, it feels like a real achievement to reach 200 posts, the first 100 came pretty easily as it was all new and I had plenty of enthusiasm. Lately I've found it harder as I've being dealing with a few things and have had to squeeze things in, as and when. I've occasionally made the mistake of forcing myself to write when either I wasn't in the mood or when I was having a block and that's never conducive to productivity, leaving me unhappy with the results and frustratingly having to rewrite posts. I've stopped that now and hope to return to the pure enjoyment of blogging. On to the next hundred.

I didn't realise that phrase was so Brit centric, I like it too! As for the ld flipping, I was surprised at how quick it is, I was expecting to wait a while but it only takes a few seconds or so, it's perfect for a lazy ass like me!

Thanks for your encouragement Ty.

Hey I hear ya man. I've definitely been there for sure, even recently. But it's always after the fact when cool cats like you and Ty actually read them and comment; that's when it makes it all worth while for me.

Fight the good fight and keep up the good work man!

This is like a support group for depressed bloggers, which is where I am at the moment, in a slump, directionless, not sure what to do next etc... I know why I'm feeling blue though - I kindly asked a certain mod of a certain pre-cert video forum to add a link to my Video Nasties series to his links page, and no answer, no nothing... A polite refusal would have been better. I need these referal links, hardly anyone comes to my place beside a few regular barflies (and if that means You, Constant Reader - I appreciate it!) The brutal world of blogging etc...

Thanks rG, really cool comment and without wanting to sound sappy I feel the same way towards all my regular readers. I really appreciate every one taking the time around here!

Wes. You keep serving and I'll keep drinking!

Brutal is the right word for this blogging lark and I can certainly see why many of them don't last very long. The important thing to try and remember is to keep doing my own thing for myself and hope other people like it.

Congrats on your 200th post, Martin, and here's to 200 more! Wow, I've never seen an LD/DVD combo before. I wasn't even aware LD players were still being made!

Cheers Brian, really appreciate your comments. The player is around twelve years old, a last ditch attempt to keep the format alive when DVD started to take over. Interestingly though they only stopped manufacturing LD players in th last few years.
