Cool Crap : Hard Boiled Japanese Laserdisc

John Woo's Hard Boiled on Japanese laserdisc, an expensive addition to my laserdisc collection at the time, costing around £65, expensive for a disc with no English subs. I can't imagine paying that kind of money these days for a standard edition of a movie, but those were the laserdisc days. I knew it didn't have English subtitles and that didn't bother me as at the time. I knew the movie practically off by heart anyway, having watched and re-watched my VHS copy countless times, I just wanted to see Hard Boiled in all it's majesty in the best quality I could get my hands on!

The sleeve is a gatefold, the movie came on two discs.

dude, that's badass! if there are no english subs, then it at least better be in widescreen. lol. i still have my vhs in letterbox format that i've probably seen a hundred times. i remember those laserdiscs being super expensive too, even now since most of them are very rare and out of print. probably why i never invested in a laserdisc player.

robotGEEK. It is in widescreen and it is definitely badass. The laserdisc format was (and mostly still is) incredibly expensive, but quality wise it was streets ahead of VHS.

I nearly sold it when DVDs started to become more popular but I'm glad I didn't now.

Good thing you didn't sell it! That's a nice collectors item. Do you have any more Woo on LD?

I really like the cover based on the Japanese poster too. Shame about the lack of subtitles!

A. I have The Killer Criterion special edition, the UK release of Hard Boiled, and the UK release of A Better tomorrow. I used to have the HK release of Bullet in the head too.

dude! i picked up a pioneer laserdisc player today for $20 at an antique store! it's my first one! totally by accident. it was hidden in the corner by some old LP's. the guy didn't even know if it worked or not, so i took a chance. i figured for $20, what the hell? i can't believe i found one! :)

robotGEEK, fantastic news, I hope you are planning a post about it. Have you managed to buy any discs yet?

At the moment I'm trying to pick up a better/newer player as mine is from 1991 and it's fair to say it's on it's last legs!

no, don't currently have any as I never thought I'd actually own one. I"d thought about getting one before, but they are so expensive on the internet, even without the remote. this was just such a random find. :P now I know I can actually purchase them now "and" watch them.

I guess you'll be another one on the hunt for used laserdiscs now, more competition!
