The Thing Prequel, Remake Or Whatever They're Calling It Trailer

The first trailer for the prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing has been released online. I don't think it looks too bad from first impressions, of course that isn't a great reaction but we are talking about The Thing here, one of my favourite movies ever. It just makes me nervous, and I'm not sure why! It's not the remake issue that bothers me, as obviously John Carpenter's film was a remake itself and regardless of how good or bad this film maybe we will always have MacReady. The other thing to point out is the film is from the producers of the Dawn of the dead remake and that turned out pretty well against my expectations.

The casting looks solid, and while I doubt anyone could ever fill Kurt Russell's shoes, Mary Elizabeth Winstead looks like she could be pretty good as a Ripley style character. If anything it's probably the CG that makes me doubt the film, after all the Carpenter film had practical special effects that have yet to be bettered even to this day both in ambition and execution. Given the proliferation of CG now, Rob Bottin's work looks unlikely to ever be surpassed.

The movie opens in the US on October 14th.

I saw the trailer for this last night and was underwhelmed by it. It's supposed to be a prequel but looks to be the same damn movie. I'll still go see it as Carpenter's version is a big favorite of mine. No doubt the CGI here will come nowhere near the level of realism and ingenuity of the 1982 film.

Brian, I agree it does look like the same movie, that may be the main strength and weakness of the finished movie.

I'll probably skip this one - worth saying that I'm not against remakes, but the trailer looks so bland. It kinda feels like The Fog remake - that in 2 years from now, no one will actually remember this film...

You have a point Wes, I haven't seen The Fog remake, Tom Welling was enough to put me off that completely. I have higher hopes for this one, but not too high!

It's not a "remake", but a "prequel". So it's supposed to be a precursor to the 1982 flick. I'll refrain from commenting too much on this prequel until I know more. Speaking of the 1982 flick however, it has some of the most vivid (and revolting) special effects of the pre-CGI days. Quite an acheivement considering that film is almost 30 years old. It was more disturbing to me than "Alien" was.

Anon, yes it's a prequel but one that looks like an almost shot for shot remake, hence the post title. Good to hear you hold the 82 version in such high regard.
