Johnnie To's Life Without Principle : A Trailer At Last UPDATED

After what feels like forever, a trailer has finally been released for Johnnie To's long awaited (by me at least!) Life without principle. The movie stars Lau Ching Wan, Richie Jen and Denise Ho and was  previously known as Death of a hostage. The movie is another of To's long gestating projects much like PTU and Sparrow, where scenes are filmed when actors are available and then left for months, it must be tough to do continuity on these movies! The story has been changed since it was first announced so I'm excited to see how this turns out.

The film has been announce as being in competition at the Venice film festival and a synopsis provided.

“Life Without Principle” tells the story of three characters: an ordinary bank teller turned financial analyst is forced to sell high risk securities to her customers in order to meet her sales target; a small-time thug delves into the futures index hoping to earn easy money to post bail for a buddy in trouble with the law; a straight-arrow Police inspector, who has always enjoyed his middle income lifestyle, is suddenly desperate for money when his wife puts a down payment on a luxury flat she can’t afford and his dying father wants him to look after a young half-sister he never knew he had. Three little people who are in dire need of money for the predicaments in their respective lives have nothing in common until a bag of stolen money worth $5m pops up and lands them in an intricate situation that forces them into making soul searching decisions about right and wrong and everything in between on the morality scale.

Hopefully we will now see this released in 2011. Here is the pretty cryptic trailer.

supposedly in post-production now, looks like it could be a great low-key crime drama! curious to know what Lau Ching-Wan's role is, looks like he's up to something! if we get both this and Motorway in 2011, alongside the already released Punished, it will be a terrific year for Milkyway crime films again

It's difficult to tell what he's up to, and I can't wait to find out! What did you think of the Motorway trailer? I'm still really looking forward to Punished too.

yes, I'm looking forward to Punished very much as well. Media Asia confirmed that the DVD will be out in late June/early July. I thought the Motorway trailer looked interesting, but it's just a teaser from HK Filmart apparently, so the eventual proper trailer will probably show some even better footage. I really hope both Motorway and LWP will be out sooner rather than later, still trying to come up with some more info on them and when they might be released.

hey, just heard from Frederic Ambroisine on my Milkyway facebook group that Life Without Principle actually isn't done shooting. he said shooting might continue in June. I really hope they get it done in time for Venice this year instead of making us wait until Cannes next year! I've heard that Motorway though is likely, but not definite, to be at Venice this year. If so, I bet the HK release will either be in Sept or Oct.
