Hong Kong Movie Locations : Exiled (Or Macau To Be Exact)

Johnnie To's quasi-sequel to The Mission ranks as the best straight up action movie of the last five years. It boasts one of the coolest opening sequences to grace any Hong Kong movie ever. The location is given away in the movie via a street name, Largo du Lilac. In 2007 we made the short trip from Hong Kong to Macau and set about searching for Lilau square where Anthony Wong and Francis Ng faced off over cigars.

It was our first trip to Macau, so after doing all the tourist destinations we found a map to look for the square. Although it looked quite a distance on the map and by this time it was by this time late afternoon we set off, luckily it was only a twenty minute walk from where we were.

It was a really cool moment to walk towards the square and the house of Wo! I shot lots of photos trying to remember the angles used in the movie but didn't really get them right. I hope you like them anyway and that they give you an idea of the place.

I was so tempted to knock on the door and ask if Wo lived there but resisted the urge, thinking how annoying it would be for the current occupant! I also tried to find the hotel that features in the film but failed, however when we were back at the ferry terminal an advert was up in there for the hotel as it had just been refurbished. It was still easily recognisable as the place even after the renovation. The hotel interior was recreated on the rooftop of Milkyway headquarters to shoot the final sequence in the movie, for more info go here. Milkyway hq is situated in Kwun Tong, and while not exactly a location as such I thought it would be cool to visit, here are a couple of pics of the building.

Jack, It really is a must see, as I said for me it's easily the best action movie for many years!

Those are great! I love Exiled, and if I remember correctly, that apartment complex is the one used in the scene towards the end when To shots from the outside facing the apartment complex, and all of the action is seen from there as it pans down?

That's a terrible description, but I can only barely recall the scene, however, I remember it as being fantastic. Either way, great pics and it's cool you got to see those sights!

I'm glad you agree with me on the quality of Exiled! If I could, I'd swap the popularity of Ong Bak with Exiled in a heartbeat. On watching Chungking Express with my fiancee downtown again and reading your location visits. I'm pretty jealous of your whole trip!

Matt, I know the scene you mean but I don't think it's the same place. Glad you like the pics, it was really cool!

A. Action movies don't really get much better!
